ENG: “A Mandolin Journey” is the journey to discover and rediscover the Mandolin, the real protagonist of this 15 tracks adventure. Together with my travel companions, Lorenzo Piccone and Luciano Puppo, we followed the call of its eight strings, which took us from their origins in Naples to an adventure around the world. We started from the Italian roots of the mandolin - a strong iconic symbol of Italy in the world - and we explored its wide repertoire, attaining, through new atmospheres and sonorities, a rich mixture of culture and tradition, which are extremely important to the music of our country. Following its tracks in search of fortune towards the Americas, we unearthed musical scores and different ways of approaching the instrument, thus creating a fascinating itinerary ranging from classical music to folk, choro, jazz and more….. Often the mandolin has traveled in 3rd class, accompanying immigrants through seas and continents, inside cardboard suitcases to unknown lands. But wherever it landed it made its new dwelling by cleverly integrating with the local culture. This is confirmed by the different shapes and tunings that it took up within the various musical genres that welcomed it. With this project we present the Italian mandolin’s journey in its various traditional, renewed and reinvented aspects; a modern melting pot of music and culture. A musical map, sailing off from the strong foundations of our tradition towards other interesting and unexpected sonorous routes.

ITA: “A Mandolin Journey” è un viaggio alla scoperta e “riscoperta” del mandolino, indiscusso protagonista di questa avventura a 15 tracce. Assecondando lo strumento e seguendo il richiamo delle sue otto corde napoletane, io e i miei compagni di avventura, Lorenzo Piccone e Luciano Puppo, ci siamo lasciati condurre in giro per il mondo. Siamo partiti dall'italianità intrinseca del mandolino, che con la sua fortissima connotazione ci rappresenta universalmente. Abbiamo abbracciato l'ampio repertorio che lo riguarda, unendo in un mix ricco di nuove atmosfere e sonorità, la cultura e la tradizione, valori estremamente importanti per l’arte e la musica del nostro Paese. Seguendo le sue tracce in cerca di fortuna verso le Americhe, abbiamo studiato le diverse partiture e i differenti modi di suonare lo strumento, dando vita ad un percorso affascinante che spazia dalla musica classica al folk, dal choro al jazz e molto altro….. Il mandolino ha spesso viaggiato in terza classe, per mari e continenti, dentro valigie di cartone; ha visto terre sconosciute e ovunque sia approdato ha preso dimora e si è intelligentemente integrato con la cultura locale. Ne è conferma il fatto che lo strumento abbia aspetto e accordature diverse a seconda dei vari generi musicali in cui si esprime. Con questo progetto abbiamo pertanto scelto di far conoscere il viaggio del mandolino italiano nei suoi diversi aspetti, tradizionali, rinnovati e reinventati, in un moderno melting pot di musica e cultura. Una “mappa” musicale che affonda le radici nella nostra tradizione per poi dirigersi verso altre, interessanti ed inaspettate rotte sonore.
